If you decide to use queued updating subscriptions, the changes to data in the subscription database are applied to the publishing database occasionally, when the network is available. The updates that you make in the subscription database are placed in the queue, and since the queued transactions are applied asynchronously in the Publisher server, conflicts can occur that need to be resolved. Detecting and resolving conflicts in transactional replication is discussed in 10, but for now you should know that you can set the conflicts to be resolved by allowing either the Publisher server to follow the publisher win policy or the Subscriber server to follow the subscriber win policy. As with immediate updating subscriptions, a new MSrepl_tran_version column is created in each of the tables in the publication database for tracking changes in the column. The changetracking triggers are also created for each of the published tables in the subscription database, and stored procedures are created for each of the tables in the publication database. In the subscription database, the MSreplication_queue system table is created, and any changes made in the subscription database are logged in this table. The Queue Reader Agent picks up the changes from this table and applies the queued transactions to the publication database by using the requisite stored procedures. If it detects any conflicts, it resolves them by following the conflict policy, and it sends the necessary commands to the distribution database, which in turn sends them to the other Subscriber servers. It also posts conflict information to the Publisher server by calling the appropriate stored procedure. This is shown in Figure 3-7.

Note It is possible to switch between immediate updating and queued updating subscriptions. You must enable the publication and the subscription for both modes before you can select either one. This is done on the Subscriber server.

It is multithreaded and thread-safe. However, you can run only one instance of the Queue Reader Agent, which means that it services all the publishing servers. Its job is to take the messages from the queue and send them to the appropriate Publisher server. These messages are now stored in the SQL Server queue. Prior to SQL Server 2008, you were able to store both in the SQL Server and the Microsoft Messaging queue, with messages being processed in the SQL Server queue as the default. The Microsoft Messaging queue has been discontinued in this version.

Now that you know what the Log Reader and Queue Reader Agents do in transactional replication, let s look at the parameters of their profiles. The Log Reader Agent has two profiles, the default agent profile and the verbose history agent profile, as shown in Figure 3-8.
