A namespace is a defined realm in which the names of all like components must be similarly structured, but uniquely identifiable. The Internet is the most readily understood DNS namespace. All hosts on the Internet must be uniquely identifiable; their full DNS name must point to a particular address. The domain namespace is organized into a hierarchy that works much like the folder structure on a computer. You cannot have two files named readme.txt in the same directory. However, there are probably dozens of files by this name scattered across different directories on your computer. That s how DNS works, too. You could not have two hosts named mailserver within the same domain, but every different domain out there could have one host named mailserver. Figure 1-6 illustrates the hierarchical nature of domain name space.

The settings on the Encryption tab in a remote access policy profile, shown in Figure 10-19, enable you to specify allowable encryption levels in a manner independent of encryption type. However, the nature of each encryption level varies with the encryp tion scheme used, as explained after the figure.

All of the factors discussed in this lesson so far should contribute to the final decision of how you are going to deploy your selected applications to your workstations. The following sections discuss the options that Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 make available to you.

Basic Encryption (MPPE 40-Bit) For dial-up and PPTP-based VPN connec tions, MPPE is used with a 40-bit key. For L2TP/IPSec VPN connections, 56-bit DES encryption is used. Strong Encryption (MPPE 56-Bit) For dial-up and PPTP VPN connections, MPPE is used with a 56-bit key. For L2TP/IPSec VPN connections, 56-bit DES encryption is used. Strongest Encryption (MPPE 128-Bit) For dial-up and PPTP VPN connections, MPPE is used with a 128-bit key. For L2TP/IPSec VPN connections, 168-bit triple DES encryption is used. No Encryption This option allows unencrypted connections matching the remote access policy conditions. To require encryption, clear this option.

The Root Domain At the top of the DNS hierarchy, there is a single domain called the root domain. The root domain is represented by a single period. Top-Level Domains Top-level domains are controlled by the Internet Activities Board (IAB), an Internet authority controlling the assignment of domain names, among other things. Top-level domains have names like com (for business) and gov (for govern ment). Table 1-1 lists common top-level domains, starting with the most frequently used domains.

Exam Tip You need to be familiar with all of the encryption settings for the exam. For example, you should know that the Basic Encryption setting refers to 40-bit MPPE encryption with PPTP/dial-up and 56-bit DES encryption with L2TP/IPSec.

Advanced Tab You can set advanced properties to specify the series of RADIUS attributes that are sent back by the IAS server to be evaluated by the NAS server/ RADIUS client. These settings are used only by RADIUS servers and are not read by Routing And Remote Access.

A local or client-based installation is one in which you install the application on the workstation s hard disk. The simplest way to do this is the manual installation method, in which an installer starts the application s setup program from a CD or DVD or a network drive. As with a manual operating system installation, this is generally the slowest method and the one that requires the most interaction from the installer. For small deployments, however, manual installations might require less time and effort than designing and implementing an elaborate automated deployment. Another element to consider when evaluating the manual deployment option is how many applications you have to install on each workstation and how complex those installations are. Deploying an office suite that uses one setup program to install five different applications is quicker and easier than installing five separate products, each with its own installation procedure. For most desktop administrators, the manual installation option is not a practical solution for applications, just as it is not practical for the operating system. There are other ways to deploy applications locally, however.
